“There’s many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell.”
Union General William Tecumseh Sherman
1880

July 9, 1861

Dear Mother Carruthers,

As you know by now, your son Thomas is dead. I regret at having lingered so long at writing you, but Col Taylor has kept us moving since we left Camp Moore. Thomas and I got a lot of talking done before he died. I still can’t imagine his not being here. I suspect I’ll hear him calling to me just any minute, as he was always doing around the farm. “It was measles,” the Doc said. There is a lot of dying here it seems, before we even get into this scrap. You know how powerful excited Thomas was to get into this fight.
