Few people are aware of the “other” slavery that took place in colonial America. While the lives of many African American slaves are well known, the stories of indentured servants are mostly over looked. Yet thousands of men, women and children lived lives while indentured that were not unlike the Southern slaves in many respects. While their dominant masters could be held legally accountable for their servant’s ultimate neglect and harsh punishments, the lives they lived under contract, were recognized by other colonists as “degrading” and “miserable” at best.
Most of these servants came from Great Britain and Western Europe, as did their colonist masters.
