A Celebration of a Century
Sylvia Engen

Every family has a history. Have you considered writing your story? Genealogy starts in the home with you and me.
Celebrating a century of family farm living brings to life the memories of ancestors who, with faith and fortitude, paved the way to establish our farm home for themselves and their descendants. Time gives a glow to such memories. My quest to revive past history mounted with keen enthusiasm when I went overseas. Visiting Norway, the land that gave my grandmother birth, added a spectacular sheen to my dreams of the past. The magic of the moment led me to believe that the scenes before my eyes sprang right out of a Norwegian folktale. I was no longer riding in a car that skillfully manoeuvred hairpin turns; instead I was transferred to the times I sat at my grandmother's feet and she made the land alive for me. Now I wish to revive the dreams and hopes our ancestors acted upon. I wish to commend them for their courage and determination to leave a beloved homeland, appreciate the challenges they met as they settled in Minnesota, and rejoice with them as they successfully established a homestead in Saskatchewan.
I wish their legacy to be embroidered in the hearts of each family member as well as in mine.
Sylvia Engen was born on the Century Farm, the eldest of the second generation who lived on it. She is a freelance writer who has retired from a career in health care. Sylvia's interests include her children, grandchildren, writing and photography. She presently lives in Camrose, Alberta, but remains loyal to Saskatchewan, the home of her youth.
